In Ontario, an average of 319 acres of farmland is lost every single day. That’s why advocates like Shawna Percy are calling for Ontario to adopt a Foodbelt, an initiative through proposed Bill 21, the Protect Our Food Act, that aims to protect vulnerable farmland and secure long-term food sovereignty.
To raise awareness, Percy is unveiling a massive community billboard on Saturday. With the help of local residents, a large-scale artwork will be installed on the broadside of her barn, located right on Highway 6, just south of Fergus.
For Percy, seeing this vision come to life is a dream years in the making.
