The “chaos” that descends upon Breslau PS when parents in cars jockey to drop off and pick up their children will be tackled with a series of “no-stopping” zones around the school. Or at least that’s the hope of Woolwich council, which this week approved the measures.

The move is the latest attempt to deal with a safety issues that “approaches chaos at times,” said director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley.

To do so, the township has approved “no stopping” restrictions on the south side of Shields Street (between Wakefield Street and Joseph Street), new “no stopping” restrictions “Monday to Friday” between the hours of (8 a.m. –  4:30 p.m.) on the east side of Joseph Street (between Dolman Street and Shields Street), new “no stopping” restriction on the west side of Joseph Street (between Dolman Street and a point 25 metres southerly), and new “no stopping” restriction on the south side of Dolman Street (from Joseph Street to a point 70 metres westerly).

Parents will be encouraged to use the drop-off and pick-up space on school property, said Kennaley, acknowledging that will cause some delays in the name of safety.

“Parents have to become more patient,” he said, “rather than a free-for-all on neighbourhood streets.”

“It’s scary to see how parents drive around other people’s kids,” noted Coun. Mark Bauman.

Waterloo Regional Police have pledged to step up enforcement around the school when the new bylaw goes into force.

In a related matter, council approved a reduction of the speed limit, to 40 km/h from 50, in front of Park Manor Public School in Elmira. The move applies to a stretch of Mockingbird Drive from Finch Place to Oriole Parkway.
