If you’re driving over the Queen’s Bush bridge in downtown Wellesley during the next few weeks, don’t be surprised to find thousands of crocheted poppies lining the railings on either side of traffic. These are the handiwork of a devoted group of local women, many with family members who were lost to war overseas, as they work to commemorate the sacrifices made through the generations.
Now in its sixth year, the project was based in Beth Schlueter’s garage, where every year volunteers create an exponential number of poppies. When they first started out, their goal was to amass 100 – a goal that was accomplished ten-fold when they realized they had more than a thousand. Now it’s grown to include other artistic tributes, such as a banner project displayed in Linwood, St. Clements and Wellesley village.
