Shovels, muddy hands, and smiles were everywhere at Elmira’s Park Manor Senior Public School April 15, as students participated in a tree-planting event facilitated by ReForest Woolwich.
Classes took turns planting trees from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. By the end of the day, the students had put in place a total of 524 trees along the edge of the schoolyard. The trees were all native species, including oak, maple, spruce, pine and Kentucky coffee.
ReForest Woolwich volunteers gave a demonstration for students, showing them effective tree-planting techniques. Afterwards, students formed small groups to plant trees. The hands-on experience took the science class beyond the classroom. Braedon Witt, ReForest Woolwich’s operations manager, noted that some teachers even incorporated tree-planting into their curriculum in anticipation of the event.
